York has been an important place in British history since the Roman period but the area on which it is situated has it seems been inhabited at least periodically since the stone age. The current settlement came to prominence after the Romans set up a large military fortress housing some six thousand doldiers to control the local tribe. This grew to become the centre of the Roman stronghold in the North and after visits by several Emporers of Rome was named the capital of Britannia Inferior and granted the status of a recognised Roman town.
Over the next centuries the town was taken firstly by the Angles, later by the Vikings and then by the Normans, from which it briefly took back control until the arrival of William the conqueror who regained control and sacked the city.
York has always had a reputation as an ecclesiastical centre and York cathedral is a great statement of that, but its location on the Great North Road and the River Ouse also made it an important place on the trading routes and it as well as its local economies of grain and wool it was also a major importer of from Europe of goods such as timber, wine, wax and canvas.
For a short time Yorks fortunes went into a bit of a decline, both through competition from growing towns close by and also the silting up of the River Ouse. But the installation of the railway once again allowed freedom of movement into York. By this time however the city was being noted more for its part in history and wealth of surviving historic buildings which in turn introduced the industry of tourism on which York capitalised.
Today with many large companies using York as their base of operations in the North and the addition of the University which opened in nineteen sixty three, York is seen as one of the great Northern cultural and social centres.
