But the installation of the railway once again allowed freedom of movement into York. By this time however the city was being noted more for its part in history and wealth of surviving historic buildings which in turn introduced the industry of tourism on which York capitalised.

Today with many large companies using York as their base of operations in the North and the addition of the University which opened in nineteen sixty three, York is seen as one of the great Northern cultural and social centres.
