Occupation of the area around Worcester has been going on for at least around two thousand years and probably more. As with many towns in the UK the main factor for its position is most likely to be a fording point over the river Severn on whose banks it is built. This almost certainly seems to be the romans reason for establishing a town here. It may have started simply as a fort from which to protect the crossing which was part of the main trade route, but later became a thriving roman town making use of the local raw materials to make pottery and smelt iron.
Since the Medieval period Worcester has been noted for its contribution to both the cloth and pottery industries and by the late eighteenth century was most noted for being the centre of glove making in the UK, at its height employing around thirty thousand people in that industry alone. For many years Worcester retained much of its Medieval past and buildings but in the nineteen fifties and sixties most of this was destroyed to make way for more modern enterprises.
During the industrial revolution the economy of Worcester for a large part turned, along with many other towns and cities, back to iron production and Worcester today still houses many engineering companies. Worcester is also noted for its production of fine porcelain from the Worcester Porcelain works known throughout the world as Royal Worcester. Unfortunately as with many of Worcesters industries production is now done elsewhere and only a token amount of the artwork is undertaken at the old site for the benefit of visitors.
