Situated along the banks of the river Mersey Warrington has been inhabited since at least the time of the Romans when it was an important crossing point over the river. Later came the West Coast Mainline railway which runs north/south through the town, then the motorways of which Warrington has three circling it. All this allowed Warrington to embrace and make the most of the industrial revolution, which it did.

As the heavy industry has declined Warrington has had to move towards the lighter and more technology based industries and until the recession hit in two thousand and eight the town was still noted for its low levels of unemployment.
