Swindon has been inhabited since at least Saxon times mostly due to its defendable location placed as it is atop a large natural hill.

For most of its existence it has been a small market town until the times of the industrial revelution. Swindon was chosen as the site for the works of the Great Western Railway as it was it on the route of the Wilts and Berks Canal and also in a prime location between London and Bristol. When the Swindon junction line was opened in 1842 it brought even more people to Swindon many in persuit of the groundbreaking healthcare offered to the Great Western Railway workforce.

During the later half of the twentieth century however the rail industry started to decline and by 1990 the last works closed. It was however not as drastic as it could have been mostly due to a long standing town clerk who foresaw the downturn in the rail industry very early on and in foresight encouraged the town to activley attract other industries. Luckily as well as having a good rail link, Swindon is also sited on the M4 motorway and so still has good transoport links.
