As the name suggests the city of Stoke-on-Trent is situated on the river Trent and is approximately half way between Birmingham and Manchester and is really made up of five towns that have converged together.
Although its earliest economy (and perhaps its largest industry) was based on coal mining the city of Stoke-on-Trent is probably known best for its pottery industries which prevailed here for around three hundred years and gave the area the nickname ‘The Potteries’.
