Dating back to at least Roman times Stevenage was for most of its early history a market town, as of the thirteenth century it was granted permission to hold two weekly markets and an annual fair, the latter of which is still held in the high street every year. As travel became more predominant and trade more widespread the position Stevenage enjoyed on the main north road made it an excellent staging post for traders going to and from London, something which can be seen by the huge number of inns that sprang up there to accommodate the stagecoaches and other travellers passing through.

Unfortunately for Stevenage it was likely that this proximity to London, which had been a bonus during the era of the horse and coach, meant that by the time of the industrial revolution when goods and people could travel much faster and further in a day Stevenage got passed by and as a result the town grew little during that time.

It was only in the latter half of the twentieth century did Stevenage expand amid hostile local opposition, when the town was designated as one of the ‘new towns’ which were to be redesigned to take some of the overspill of an overflowing London.
