Situated where the river Tyne meets the North Sea, South Sheilds is naturally placed to be a predominant trading town and indeed there has been a settlement here for at least two thousand years.
Although at times in its history it has been an important landing site both traders and invaders, around the twelfth century due to complaints from Newcastle that it was taking trade away an order was made that no ships should be allowed to load or unload at the town and so South Sheilds had to rely on its fishing trade.
Since that time until the present the town has had many important industries from salt and glass manufacturing to coal mining and chemical production. The industrial revolution saw several shipyards open in Sheilds and for a while this became one of the largest sources of employment.
With the scaling down of industry in the area at large South Sheilds has had to look to other ways to make money. Being coastal naturally means tourism now makes up a large part of its economy but the town has largely become a commuter town for larger towns such as Newcastle and Sunderland.
