Solihull was founded primarily as a market town around a thousand years ago and retains many from its past including the church parts of which date from the thirteenth century, the schoolhouse which dates from the sixteenth century and many Tudor style houses and shops.
The main reason for its wealth of old buildings is two-fold, firstly Solihull didn’t really partake of the industrial revolution. It never had any major industry as it has none of the main resources that normally draw industry to a town. Secondly not having any industry it also escaped the attention of German bombing raids that damaged many of the old buildings in the neighbouring towns of Birmingham and Coventry.
It was in the first half of the twentieth century that Solihull really took off. The development of the Rover Plant, a better transport infrastructure and the building of large amounts of new housing all drew people to the area.
Today the population of Solihull is nearly one hundred thousand and the largest employers in the area are the Land Rover plant, the National Exhibition Centre and Birmingham International Airport (most of which is actually in Solihull).
