Situated on the river Sheaf the current city of Sheffield is founded on an area that has been periodically inhabited since the stone-age.
From around the fourteenth century to the present day Sheffield has been best known for its steel and in particular the manufacture of knives and cutlery. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Sheffield suffered from both a series of economic and physical disasters and from a huge and unsustainable influx of people resulting in some of the poorest living conditions in the UK.
During the Second World War Sheffield’s manufacturing capabilities saw it become a large producer of weapons and ammunition and consequently of a target for bombing raids from which it suffered a great deal of damage. After the war the city saw much redevelopment and grew again until the end of the century when the closure of many of its steel works saw it start to once again fall.
It has been in the last decade and through major new investment that Sheffield has been able to attract new businesses to locate there and as such has seen a revival of its fortunes. It is now ranked by the UK Cities Monitor among the top ten best cities for business. Despite this Sheffield has not completely escaped the current economic downturn and we have seen an increase in unemployment and debt levels followed by a natural rise in home repossessions and sell and rent back agreements being taken out as people try to find ways out of their financial situations.
