Leicester has been inhabited for at least two thousand years. It has been an important town since the time of the Romans when it was primarily a military town on one of the main Roman routes around Britain and from which period the baths still remain.
During the Middle ages Leicester became a successful market town but and was one of the first places to be given city status but this was lost for hundreds of years after a conflict between the church and aristocracy and was not given back till the early twentieth century.
During the industrial revolution Leicester prospered, mostly in the textile and later the engineering industries. This was helped through Leicesters canal and rail network connections to London and Birmingham.
Modern Leicester went through a decline in its traditional industries to be replaced by more modern ones. Existing housing estates were expanded and new ones built. The city also experienced an influx of immigrants during the later part of the twentieth century and its predicted that by around two thousand and eleven the city will have around fifty percent ethnic population.
