Guildford as its name suggests was most likely founded due to its position at the most convenient crossing place along the river Wey around the time of the Saxons. Guildford was sacked by William the conqueror after the battle of Hastings and later he built (or rebuilt) Guildford Castle as an important strategic defence and as a show of power. The keep still stands to this day, but being sited on the Great Windsor Park the castle was in later more peaceful years used as a royal hunting lodge.
During the seventeenth century the River Wey was made navigable for ships to reach the River Thames. This was naturally a huge boost to the local industries who took full advantage and the town prospered as can be seen in some of the grand old buildings that still stand.
This was expanded further in the eighteenth century by a network of canals and navigations of which Guildford was at the heart but even being as easily accessible as Guildford was it wasn’t by the industrial revolution as much as many towns in the UK and as a result retains much of its ‘old world’ charm including a cobbled high street.
Today Guildford is still primarily a market town with three weekly markets being held. Its art gallery attracts a wealth of visitors as does the shopping arcade but of course this comes at a price. Guildford is today one of the most expensive places to live in the UK, and with an economy based largely around the retail sector it has become something of a commuter town.
